Last night we announced that former Pantera vocalist and bassist Phil Anselmo and Rex Brown have officially signed on to do a reunion tour with Pantera, despite the deaths of founding “Dimebag” guitarist Darrell Abbott and drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott. Now Phil and Rex have announced who will play guitar and drums for this tour. And the winners are…
Ozzy and Black Label Society guitarist Zakk Wylde and Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante!
According Billboard, a line-up featuring Wylde and Benante has been given the green light. Pantera’s new lineup will tour North America and perform at several major festivals this summer.
To reiterate something our readers seem to agree with us on: we think this is an incredibly dumb idea. A big part of Pantera’s indomitable magic was the Abbott Brothers, Dimebag in particular (no shade on Vinnie, we love Vinnie, but he wasn’t the fleet-fingered riff god that Darrell was). Meanwhile, Pantera broke up under unpleasant circumstances, and I never felt like Phil and the Abbotts were back on good terms. Sounds like tightly wrapped sour milk to me. But hey, I guess I won’t buy tickets and that’ll be it.
