BTS becomes the first Asian group to win the highest honor at AMAs

South Korean supergroup BTS once again rewrote K-pop history on Monday by becoming the first Asian group to win the Best Artist of the Year award at the American Music Awards ( AMA).

The group has been nominated for the fifth consecutive year at the AMAs since 2018 and has won four years in a row. But he’s never been nominated in the Artist of the Year category before.

Fans had the final say on who won the 2021 AMAs from nominees chosen based on streaming, album and digital sales, radio and social activity.

The South Korean hit machine continued its record-breaking run this year as its single “Butter” sat for 10 non-consecutive weeks on the Billboard Hot 100. The band followed it with two more chart tops, “Permission to Dance “. and “My Universe”, a single in collaboration with British rock band Coldplay.

Critics say this groundbreaking victory has once again proven BTS’s undeniable impact on the music industry.

“The victory showed that BTS became a superstar representing the era, like the Beatles of the 1960s, Elton John in the 1970s, Michael Jackson in the 1980s and Nirvana and Mariah Carey in the 1990s,” music industry Lim Jin-mo said in a telephone interview with Yonhap News Agency on Monday. “BTS didn’t come to fame with just one hit, but was enjoyed on the Billboard charts for over two to three years, and (that feat) proved the power of its fandom.”
