Motet’s Ryan Jalbert Presents Jalbatross’ Debut EP With “Chomper” [Listen]

Jalbatrosthe new solo project of Motet guitarist Ryan Jalbertreleased a funky single, “Chomper”, on the band’s upcoming EP.

The song is a raw, catchy funk melody that’s both laid-back and upbeat, with a balance of expressive melody and dance-worthy groove. The quartet’s four voices weave into each other, layering complementary rhythms and textures to create a robust and cohesive groove, and the vintage analog production lends a classic vibe to the track.

In a social media postJalbert explained the personal significance of the project:

Tomorrow, June 22, I will be 40 years old. Last year, when I was 39, I decided I couldn’t reach the big 4-0 not having achieved a personal goal of writing and producing an album of original music and releasing it. do with one of my favorite drummers of all time, my brother Hake. After combing through a large batch of music I had recorded from home during the pandemic, I booked a few days in the studio and recruited two of my best friends to complete the quartet – my lifelong buddy and bass maestro. range Tim Philpot (bass) and my dear band mate and funk machine Joey Porter (keys). I sent some demos, we took Colin to Denver, did a day of rehearsals and we went in and cut 6 songs in 2 days. We all played together, recorded on tape and made a record. I’m really looking forward to sharing Jalbatross’ 6 song EP later this summer, but for now I can celebrate my 40th tour knowing I’ve reached my goal – my album is in the bag and ready to go. be torn.

Originally from Western Massachusetts, Ryan Jalbert began studying guitar at the age of 12. He fell in love with New England’s burgeoning jam scene in the late 90s and early 2000s, and after earning a degree in jazz guitar he moved to Colorado where he was recruited to join The Motet. He has been the band’s guitarist since 2005.

Jalbert honed his freelance skills with various artists and tours while writing, recording and touring full time with The Motet. When the pandemic forced him off the road, he got busy writing new music. When the lockdown ended, he ended up with a batch of original material that was ready for release.

In July 2021, Ryan booked a studio session and tracked six songs over two days with help from his brother. Colin Jalbert on drums, lifelong friend Tim Philpot on bass, and the keyboardist of the Motet Joey Porter on the keys. Recorded using analog gear and vintage sounds, the result Jalbatros EP is the sound of four friends and talented musicians doing what they do best.
