Advertising – Music Director
We are looking to recruit an experienced and enthusiastic Music Director who shares our love of great choral music and will bring their own energy and inspiration to continue our very successful musical journey, further developing our choir. Our current Managing Director, Donal McCrisken, is retiring after 22 rewarding years with us, and the new Managing Director will be required from January 2022.
Founded in 1995 on the feast of Saint Cecilia, the Cappella Caeciliana of twenty musicians is a leading choir in Northern Ireland. This award-winning cross-community group has toured throughout Ireland, Scotland, Europe and the United States, with a repertoire ranging from plainsong to contemporary compositions, with a particular interest in great sacred music. The choir has worked closely with many prominent contemporary composers and conductors, including Sir James Macmillan, Stephen Layton and Eamonn Dougan, sings regularly in liturgies and concerts in Northern Ireland and beyond, and recorded five CDs. Our repertoire is largely a cappella.
We celebrated our 25th anniversary in 2020-21, one of the highlights of which was the production of a professionally produced ‘containment’ video. The season also features a series of lectures and online workshops, featuring many famous artists, including Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and Wynne Evans, part of which was broadcast by BBC Radio Ulster. Most recently, we were one of the first choirs of our type on the island of Ireland to return to face-to-face performance (Armagh, Aug 2021).
We usually give 6 concerts and sing 2-3 liturgies per year. The Executive Director, in consultation with the committee, is responsible for the programming and planning of these engagements and plays a vital role in the development of the choir by attending committee meetings and auditioning the singers. The choir rehearses weekly during the school term on Sunday evenings from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in Belfast.
We are an ambitious choir and would like to appoint a new MD who will continue to challenge us as singers and achieve the best choir possible.
The other duties of the Director General will include:
Preparation and conduct of rehearsals and performances; serve as a member of the committee; make repertoire proposals and new opportunities / events; provide expert advice to the committee; assess and audition all applicants applying for membership, with assistance from choir members as needed; support the vocal and musical development of individual singers and the overall development of the choir; undertake other tasks as required and agreed upon.
