Musical preview: a song for September, a concert for November

British singer-songwriter JP Cooper burst onto the scene with the irresistible ‘September Song’.

Scandinavia and especially Copenhagen have always had a special place in his heart and this led him to a collaboration with Norwegian singer Astrid S on ‘Sing With Me’.

He’s coming to Store Vega on November 5 for a show – find out why this is the show you won’t want to miss in this interview.

How have you kept your fan base engaged during the pandemic?

We decided to do small Instagram live sessions regularly. We also did a few zooms – every Monday I played a few songs and we chatted. It was actually a pretty amazing time to connect with people – because everyone was home. We found a positive point there.

How important are acoustic versions to you?

My favorite part of the live shows was always when in the middle of the show they would strip it down and do some acoustic numbers. I’ve always wanted to do these versions. I think it’s so important that people can still access the bones of the song – the raw ingredients.

What genres of musicians have inspired you in your musical journey?

I accidentally discovered a passion for music just growing up in Manchester. I did not grow up in a musical household. My dad was an artist so I grew up around creating – but not so much music. My friends and I were always looking for new music. There was a store called “Vinyl Exchange” and they had records of not so well known artists and wrote descriptions of them.

Will you be bringing physical copies of your new album ‘SHE’ to Copenhagen?

We do this tour a little differently. For example, we’ll go to a country for a week, do three shows and hang out. So, for example, let’s go to Denmark and do that – we will definitely have physical copies.

Is there anything you love about Denmark since you included it in your tours?

All the countries in this region – my idea of paradise is the wilderness of the north. Give me evergreens, birch and seasons. Whenever I come to the Nordic countries or Scandinavia, I love it.

Who is she”?

She’s a lot of people – I wanted to take my hat off to all the women in my life. I discovered that most opportunities for growth came from women in my life.
