Singer and fingerstyle guitarist Adam Weinberg – who is best known on the live music circuit as the guitarist for Matisyahu on his world tours as an acoustic duo for more than five years – is releasing a new single “Drifting Through featured on his latest album, Laugh, Cry, Sorrow, Hope (release date: May 13, 2022). The album includes a 32-page companion book and album cover (pictured above) designed by the late Mel Marcelo, a legendary digital illustrator from San Diego. Laugh, Cry, Grief, Hope features bassist Marc Friedman (The Slip) on multiple instruments (bass, electronics, keyboards, percussion) as well as mixing engineer. DJ Le Spam (Spam Allstars) designed the recording sessions.
The island reggae vibes of “Drifting Through” close Laugh, Cry, Grief, Hope with an uplifting feel leaving listeners with smiles on their faces. Tight, syncopated horns fuse with Weinberg’s deft acoustic guitar work for the perfect summertime soundtrack. Weinberg says of the song, “The track is about self-acceptance and being on the other side of difficult emotions. I wanted to end the album on a very positive note. Whatever challenges people go through, I’m hopeful that they can see that things are going to be okay. I’ve found that in order to go through the struggle, I have to embrace the good, the bad, and the suffering. Once I welcome it all , I am able to feel a little joy.”
Weinberg’s lyric debut, Laugh, Cry, Grief, Hope, is as the album’s title suggests: an inner meditation on personal loss, healing, and genuine reflections on the search for happiness. While he studied jazz, composition and cognitive psychology at Washington University (St. Louis) and played alongside big names such as percussionist Cyro Baptista (Paul Simon, Trey Anastasio, John Zorn), Weinberg’s latest tracks cross genres from Americana, Leo Kottke-inspired instrumentals, reggae, as well as a dive into family music on two songs (Weinberg is the father of three). The introspective nature of Laugh, Cry, Grief, Hope is the result of what Weinberg calls “a catastrophic 5 week period in my life in 2019”.
Weinberg adds: “Sometimes in life you are faced with the unexpected. Unfortunately, in the summer of 2019, in a short time, my son had seizures, my mother went to intensive care and my beau -brother passed away after a long struggle with drug addiction and sobriety. I lost him completely. On the recommendation of my therapist, I started playing the guitar again after a while without taking it for a while. She suggested that I just play for five minutes a day and record everything. It really helped me out of a really dark place. I immersed myself in cognitive behavioral therapy and wrote songs, and honestly, at the end of this really difficult period, I had enough material for three albums and Laugh, Cry, Grief, Hope was born.”
Laugh, Cry, Grief, Hope will be available worldwide on Friday, May 13, 2022.
