Extreme metal band Soulfy have announced a new album Totemand previewed the upcoming effort by unveiling its crushing debut single, Superstition.
Due August 5, Totem will be the band’s 12th studio album, and their first since 2018. Ritualafter a handful of live and compilation releases in 2019 and 2020.
It will also be the trio’s first release since the departure of guitarist Marc Rizzo, with whom Soulfy parted ways in 2021 for “personal reasons”. As such, producer and instrumentalist Arthur Rizk was recruited to fill the lead duties.
The 10-track effort has been described by frontman Max Cavalera as a “celebration of spiritual nature”, and is the product of a two-year songwriting journey with bandmate/son, Zyon.
“This album is about all the joy, fun and anger of metal,” commented Cavalera.
Although there is only one Totem1st song under their belt so far, Soulfly has already seemingly broken the “anger” aspect of that promise with Superstition. True to their word, each member of Soulfly uses their respective instruments to unleash an all-out metal assault, combining blistering drum beats with crushing electric guitar beats.
A handful of Rizk’s main lines are also littered throughout the three-minute track as a form of face-melting decoration, with microcosms of rapid-fire stick throws and rapid ladder runs like the flash preceding the brutal and thrusting finale.
Join Rizk and the central unit of Soulfly – which includes Max, Zyon and bassist Mike Leon – for Totem are John Powers of Eternal Champion, Chris Ulsh of Power Trip and John Tardy of Obituary, who will feature at various points on the LP.
Max Cavalera and Rizk also led production duties, with John Aquilino, Rizk and Powers providing support in the recording process.
