A woman died and another man was injured after the car they were traveling in was crushed by a large tree near Hanging Rock, northeast of Melbourne.
Emergency services were called to South Rock Road in Woodend at around 2.30pm on Thursday after reporting a tree had fallen onto a moving car.
A spokeswoman for Ambulance Victoria said paramedics assessed two patients at the scene, but the passenger could not be saved.
The man driving the car was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and is now in stable condition.
A Victoria Police spokesperson said detectives were still working to establish the exact circumstances of the crash and investigations were ongoing.
South Rock Road is the main thoroughfare leading to the entrance to the popular Hanging Rock tourist destination. The grounds of the venue include the summit promenade, a racecourse and a concert hall.
Australian musician Nick Cave is set to perform at Hanging Rock on Friday and Saturday next week, with freelance singer-songwriter Courtney Barnett as his support act.
